Eleuthero known as Siberian ginseng, was one of the first plants to be called an adaptogen.

What is an Adaptogen? This is essentially something that helps the body adapt well to stress. Adaptogens are considered to be building herbs that are often used for people with signs of weakness or deficiency such as chronic fatigue. The herbs in this category have a wide range of energetics and is most effective when the herb is chosen to match the person.

Eleuthero helps strengthen immune function, and makes an excellent immune restorative; it is appropriate for use during acute illness or convalescence and has been used to help restore white blood cells counts during chemotherapy and radiation. Some research has shown that Eleuthero can potentiate (strengthen) the effects of certain antibiotics.

Eleuthero is normalizing to the thyroid, so can be beneficial for those with hyperthyroidism as well as hypothyroid conditions.

In Chinese medicine Eleuthero is considered a qi tonic specific to the spleen and kidney. It is used for anxiety, fatigue, anorexia, insomnia and aches of the lower back and knees.

Eleuthero has long been used to improve athletic performance by decreasing fatigue.

Extensive research done on eleuthero indicates it has anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antitumor, hepatoprotective, anti-ulcer, and anti-fatigue effects.
